The feel of the journey

One week. A whole island of contrasts.

Begin among the gardens and ancient stone of the cultural triangle. Climb into tea country, trade the highland air for Udawalawe’s open landscapes, then let Galle’s sea-facing streets bring the journey to a close. Each day changes the scenery, without losing the thread.

  1. Sigiriya & Polonnaruwa
  2. Tea-estate visit & tasting
  3. Udawalawe wildlife safari
  1. Day 1

    Arrive in the cultural triangle

Travel to Habarana or Sigiriya. Settle in, then discover village life, paddy fields and a lake by catamaran, with a Sri Lankan lunch.

  2. Day 2

    Sigiriya & Polonnaruwa

Visit Sigiriya Rock Fortress and explore Polonnaruwa’s palace ruins, Gal Vihara and ancient waterworks. Return to your cultural-triangle base for dinner and a guided night walk.

  3. Day 3

    Dambulla to Kandy

Visit Dambulla Cave Temple and discover spice growing on the journey to Kandy. Explore the Temple of the Tooth and Kandy Lake, followed by a cultural performance.

  4. Day 4

Tea country, from leaf to cup

Travel into Nuwara Eliya’s highlands. Walk through a tea estate, visit a working factory and taste different teas before afternoon tea and an evening at leisure.

  5. Day 5

    Into Udawalawe

Descend from the highlands, pausing at viewpoints or waterfalls. An afternoon 4×4 safari explores Udawalawe’s wildlife habitats. Stay overnight in the area.

  6. Day 6

The streets & ramparts of Galle

Continue to Galle for a guided fort walk and time among its historic streets. Finish with sunset on the ramparts and dinner in or near the fort.

Important for this journey

For a less demanding Sigiriya visit, discuss the gardens. Pidurangala is another rock climb, not an easy-access alternative. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
