The feel of the journey

Let the habitats set the itinerary.

This ten-day route follows changing habitats: Kitulgala and Sinharaja’s rainforest, Udawalawe’s open country, then the highlands and the dry zone. Early starts earn their place in the schedule. The aim is time in the right landscapes, never a promise of a particular sighting.

  1. Sinharaja rainforest birding
  2. Horton Plains at first light
  3. Udawalawe & dry-zone habitats
  1. Day 1

    Arrive in rainforest country

Travel to Kitulgala and settle in. Begin guided afternoon birdwatching if your arrival time allows.

  2. Day 2

    Kitulgala to Sinharaja

Spend the morning birding before travelling via Ratnapura to Kudawa, beside Sinharaja. Explore the lodge’s surroundings in the afternoon.

  3. Day 3

    A full rainforest day

Set out with packed meals for guided birdwatching in Sinharaja. Focus on forest habitats and mixed-species flocks without promising particular sightings.

  4. Day 4

    From forest to Udawalawe

Enjoy morning birding before travelling to Udawalawe for an afternoon Jeep safari. Stay overnight in the area.

  5. Day 5

    Into the highlands

Travel to Nuwara Eliya with birding stops along the way. Visit Victoria Park in the afternoon.

  6. Day 6

    Horton Plains at first light

Leave early for highland birdwatching in Horton Plains. Later visit Eagle’s Viewpoint near Shanthipura, returning to Nuwara Eliya.

  7. Day 7

    Tea country to Kandy

Continue to Kandy, with an optional tea-factory stop. Explore the birdlife and planting of Peradeniya’s Royal Botanic Gardens.

  8. Day 8

From Kandy to the dry zone

Birdwatch in Udawattekele Sanctuary before continuing to Habarana. Explore the tank and lodge surroundings, followed by a guided night walk.

  9. Day 9

    Sigiriya & Polonnaruwa

Visit Sigiriya and its sanctuary for culture and birdwatching. Continue to Polonnaruwa for a proposed cycling experience. The final overnight base is confirmed during planning.
